Leveraging grant dollars through the State of Michigan Redevelopment Ready Communities program three local jurisdictions including the Village of Vernon, Vernon Township, and the City of Durand are coordinating to create a joint economic development and regional marketing strategy. Strategic planning activities will be led by economic and community development consulting firm, Place + Main Advisors.

The final strategy document will be tailored to each unit of government and create a plan of action best suited for their unique goals. Common goals include attracting and retaining residents and businesses, and increasing resident quality of life. The strategy will use data and public opinion to identify targeted audiences and businesses to attract to the region, as well as determine the best way to communicate area benefits. This strategy will also forecast potential growth and offer recommendations on how to manage that growth in a way that helps preserve the character of the area.

Durand City Manager, Colleen O’Toole notes, “The impacts of economic change do not stop at municipal boundaries. In order for our region to enjoy greater economic prosperity while still maintaining the character that so many residents love, we need to plan collaboratively. I am extremely pleased to be working with my counterparts in the village and township to make that happen.”

The Village of Vernon Clerk, Krista Goodman remarks, “The Village of Vernon is excited to be working with the City of Durand and Vernon Township. It is an exciting time for our residents and businesses. Planning and having foresight for the future is a difficult task, but is necessary for economic growth. The Village has recently seen growth with new businesses coming to the Village. We want to see continued economic growth and prosperity for all. By obtaining grant dollars through the State of Michigan Redevelopment Ready Communities program, we will be able to achieve our goals and be successful economically as well as maintain our small-town feel.” Please attend the below listed summits and share your thoughts, ideas and opinions for this upcoming and exciting time.

To kick off the planning process each community will host an economic development summit to solicit input from area residents and businesses. Participation is open to all members of the public. Those summits will be held:

• March 3, 2020 at Vernon Village Hall from 6pm to 8pm

• March 5, 2020 at Vernon Township Hall from 6pm to 8pm

• March 16, 2020 at Durand City Hall from 6pm to 8pm

Refreshments will be served during each of the meetings. The events offer community members the opportunity to have their voice heard by consultants, Place + Main Advisors, who will lead the sessions. Residents are encouraged to come ready to share opinions.

“We are excited to be working with Durand, Vernon, and Vernon Township on this strategy,” said Joe Borgstrom, Principal of Place + Main Advisors. “The community has so much to offer already and has a ton of potential. We look forward to working with the residents and businesses here to create a great plan that reflects the desires of the people here to be the best community they can be.”

The planning process is expected to last approximately five to six months. The final strategy will be made public following completion later this year.

Season 3 Episode 1: The Chair - 1.24.20

Two years ago Josh Strickland purchased an antique chair that purportedly spent decades in the old Owosso Post Office. Today a photo was shared in the Historic Owosso Facebook group. In the photo, a man is sitting in a similar chair. While the thread attempts to figure out who is pictured and where in Owosso the photo was taken, one user suggests that it may have been in the old post office.
